How to check the element

A heating element turns electrical current into heat, warming water, air or an oven cavity depending on the appliance. Elements usually fail open circuit, so the appliance runs but never gets warm, or they short to earth and trip the safety switch when the heating stage starts. Other clues are cycles that run very long, heating fault codes or visible burn marks on the element. A multimeter test across the terminals and from each terminal to earth will confirm it. Check the thermostat, sensor and wiring as well, since they can stop an element heating.

Part details

Genuine BSH part 12046381

Heating element

Listed in the BSH parts range (Bosch, Siemens, Neff)

Changing the element safely

Turn the appliance off at the wall and unplug it, or isolate it at the circuit breaker if it is hard-wired, in which case a licensed electrician should fit the element.
