Washing machine not heating the water? Check the element

The element sits in the bottom of the outer tub, below the drum, and heats the water to the temperature the wash program asks for. The NTC sensor tells the control board how hot the water is. When an element burns out, washes come out cold, programs run far longer than normal while the machine waits for heat, or the machine stops with a heating error. An element that has shorted to earth can also trip the safety switch as soon as heating starts. A multimeter check across the terminals confirms an open circuit element.

Fitting the new element

Unplug the washing machine and turn off the taps. Depending on the model, the element is reached from the back or the lower front, and it's held by a centre nut that squeezes a rubber seal.
