What a faulty Ariston washer inlet valve looks like
The inlet valve sits where the tap hose connects at the back of the machine. When the control board calls for water, it energises a solenoid coil and the valve opens. Being a 2 way valve, it has two outlets that are switched separately, so water can be routed to different parts of the detergent drawer. When a coil burns out or the valve sticks, the washer may not fill, may fill very slowly, may leave powder sitting in the drawer, or may keep letting water in even with the machine off. A cracked valve body shows up as a leak at the rear of the cabinet.

Changing the inlet valve
Turn the taps off and unplug the washer before you start, then disconnect the inlet hose and keep a towel handy for the water left inside. Photograph the wiring and the internal hose positions before removing the old valve, because each outlet has to go back to its own hose. Once it's in, open the taps slowly and check every joint for drips on the first fill.
