Belling grill not working? Signs the element has gone
A dual grill element carries two separate heating circuits, which is how a cooker with a dual grill setting can heat either the full width or just the centre. When one circuit fails, you may find the full grill works but the half setting doesn't, or the other way round. A complete failure means no glow at all and toast that never browns. Look for a crack, bubble or bright spot along the sheath, and note whether the grill trips the safety switch when selected. Testing each circuit with a multimeter will confirm which section has gone open circuit.

Changing the grill element
Turn the cooker off at the isolating switch or circuit breaker first. Remove the shelves and any covers, undo the element's fixing screws and ease it out until you can reach the terminals. Photograph the wiring and move the leads across one at a time, as a dual element has more than two connections. Hard-wired cookers should be reconnected by a licensed electrician.
