Gas cooktop not sparking, or clicking non-stop?

The spark generator, also called an igniter module, takes 240V mains and turns it into high voltage pulses sent down four leads to the ignition pins at each burner. Press and turn a knob and the switch behind it tells the module to fire. When the module fails you may get no clicking at all, a weak spark on every burner, or clicking that won't stop. Constant clicking is often caused by moisture or a spill on a knob switch, so dry the cooktop out before blaming the igniter.

Safety first when fitting an igniter

Switch off the power at the wall and turn off the gas before removing the cooktop. Photograph the mains and spark lead connections so each burner lead goes back to its outlet, and keep high voltage leads away from metal edges. In Australia, work on gas appliances needs a licensed gas fitter, and any hard-wired connection a licensed electrician. Test that every burner lights cleanly afterwards.
