Burner knob slipping, cracked or hard to turn

A gas burner knob turns the spindle on the gas tap, and on most cooktops you push it in to light the burner and hold it while the flame failure device warms up. If the knob cracks or the hole that grips the spindle wears round, it can slip, spin without moving the tap, or make it hard to hold in during lighting. Faded markings make it difficult to tell high from low, or whether a burner is fully off. Changing the knob

Make sure every burner is off and the cooktop has cooled. Pull the old knob straight up off the spindle. Some knobs have a small spring or clip inside, so check whether it needs to move across. Line up the flat on the spindle with the new knob and push it on until it seats. If the spindle is loose, stiff or leaks gas, stop and call a licensed gas fitter.
