Product details

If a Blanco gas burner lights but goes out as soon as you let go of the knob, the thermocouple is a prime suspect. Part 0290057 is the genuine Blanco thermocouple in the long version. Thermocouples come in different lengths and end fittings, so compare the length and connections of your old one, or check with us, before ordering. Fitting should be done by a licensed gas fitter.

Gas burner won't stay lit? How the thermocouple works

A thermocouple is the flame failure safety device on a gas burner. Its tip sits in the flame and, once heated, produces a tiny voltage that holds the gas valve open. If the flame goes out, the tip cools, the voltage drops and the valve shuts off the gas. When the thermocouple wears out, the burner lights while you hold the knob in but dies when you release it, or cuts out during cooking. A dirty or misaligned tip can cause the same fault, so check its position in the flame first.

Fitting the thermocouple

Gas work must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter under Australian rules. The fitter will turn off the gas and isolate power to the ignition, route the new thermocouple the same way as the old one without sharp kinks, and set the tip in the right spot in the flame. The connection at the valve is tightened carefully, then the burner is tested for correct flame failure operation and leaks.

Questions about this part

Can I fit a thermocouple myself?

No. In Australia gas appliance repairs must be done by a licensed gas fitter. They can also confirm 0290057 is the right length for your burner and test the flame failure system once it's fitted.
