Gas cooktop burner keeps going out?

When a cooktop burner is lit, its thermocouple heats up in the flame and produces a small current that keeps the safety valve in the gas control open. If the flame blows out, the thermocouple cools and the valve shuts within seconds. A tired thermocouple makes too little current. The burner then lights while the knob is pressed but dies when released, flickers out on low, or needs the knob held for a long time. Grime on the tip, or a tip pushed out of the flame, can cause the same thing.

Fitting and safety

Gas work in Australia must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. Isolate the gas and switch the power off at the wall before the cooktop is lifted or opened. The fitter may first try cleaning the thermocouple tip and checking it sits in the flame, as that sometimes cures the fault. After fitting, the connection is leak tested and every burner is checked.
