A thermocouple is a flame failure device. When the flame heats its tip, it produces a tiny voltage that holds a magnet in the gas tap open. If the flame goes out, the voltage drops and the tap shuts off the gas. When the thermocouple fails, the burner lights while you hold the knob in but dies as soon as you let go. A tip that's bent away from the flame, crusted with burnt food or cracked is a common cause, as is a loose connection at the tap end.

Who should fit a gas thermocouple

Gas work in Australia must be done by a licensed gas fitter. They will shut off the gas supply and isolate power to the ignition, then lift out the trivets and burner parts to reach the thermocouple. The probe end fixes at the burner and the other end connects at the gas tap. Afterwards the fitter leak tests the joints and confirms the burner stays alight once the knob is released.
